Suspected drunk driver jumps curb, crashes into children and woman, Wichita police say
A suspected drunk driver jumped the curb and crashed into two children and a woman, Wichita police said.
Police were called at around 9:40 p.m. Saturday to a vehicle versus pedestrian injury accident at Hillside and 31st Street South, Officer Kevin Wheeler said in a statement.
Emergency crews found that a black Audi AS6 had struck three pedestrians — a 29-year-old woman and two boys, ages 6 and 7. The trio was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, as was the 52-year-old woman who was driving the car. The two children have since been released from the hospital, police said.
Investigators determined the driver was southbound on Hillside when she drove onto the curb as she turned westbound on 31st South, police said. The car struck the pedestrians on the curb as it made a U-turn. The car then went eastbound before crashing head-on into an SUV.
The SUV had stopped and was unoccupied because the people inside had gotten out to help the victims.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is believed to be a factor in the wreck, police said.
