Wichita man charged with murder in shooting of 18-year-old Aubrey Resendez

A Wichita man accused of killing a teenager last week has been charged with murder.

Joshua Johnson, 32, was charged Monday in Sedgwick County District Court with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm. His bond was set at $300,000, the district attorney’s office said in a news release.

The case stems from the April 13 shooting death of 18-year-old Wichita woman Aubrey Resendez. Wichita police arrested Johnson after the shooting, which officers said was not random.

Police were called after midnight to a shooting at the Kwik Shop in the 600 block of South West Street, where they found a white 2014 Dodge Avenger with the rear window shot out. Rezendez was in the car, along with her 18-year-old boyfriend and her 27-year-old brother.

The men were not injured, but Resendez had been shot. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Investigators determined a disturbance happened in the 4200 block of West Pawnee between the occupants of the Avenger and a silver 2006 Dodge Ram pickup. Police said that Johnson fired multiple shots at the Avenger during the disturbance, killing Resendez. The truck had been reported stolen in Reno County.
