Wichita woman, 18, is city’s latest homicide victim after overnight shooting
Police are asking the public for tips so they can solve an overnight shooting that left an 18-year-old woman dead.
Aubrey Resendez of Wichita died from her injuries at a Wichita hospital Monday. Wichita police spokesman Officer Charley Davidson said officers who responded to a shooting call at the Kwik Shop in the 600 block of South West Street around 12:40 a.m. found a 2014 white Dodge Avenger with a shattered rear window and three people inside.
Two men in the car, the 18-year-old driver and a 27-year-old passenger, were not hurt. But Resendez had at least one fatal gunshot wound.
Police say the shooting followed a fight that started in the 4200 block of West Pawnee between the people in the Avenger and those in a silver truck. As the fight progressed, someone inside the truck “fired multiple shots at the Avenger, striking the vehicle and striking Resendez,” Davidson wrote in an emailed news release.
“This is not a random incident,” he added without giving further details. Resendez’s killing is the city’s 16th criminal homicide and overall homicide of the year.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Wichita police detectives at 316-268-4407, Wichita-Sedgwick County Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or the See Something, Say Something hot line at 316-519-2282.
