Wichita police arrest couple who allegedly asked for food then stole Xbox, shot man
A couple who they say went to a south-side home on the pretense of needing food then stole a video gaming system and shot the resident when he confronted them, according to Wichita police.
Devonte J. Whichard, 24, and Shardae M. Kirby, 26, both of Wichita, were booked into the Sedgwick County Jail after 4 p.m. Monday, according to an online log of inmates. They are each being held in lieu of $100,000 bond. The pair are boyfriend and girlfriend, Wichita Police Department spokesman Officer Charley Davidson said.
Davidson, in an emailed news release, said the couple went to the home of a 44-year-old man they know early on March 27, knocked on the door and asked for something to eat. The home is in the 2900 block of South Bunker Hill, near 31st and Oliver.
“Once inside, Whichard grabbed an Xbox, and both suspects fled. The victim pursued and confronted Whichard,” Davidson wrote in the release.
“Whichard then pulled out a handgun and fired a shot, striking the victim.”
Both Kirby and Whichard ran away afterward, he wrote.
When police arrived at the home around 4:10 a.m. that morning, they found the 44-year-old man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his shoulder. He was treated at a local hospital.
Officers arrested Kirby and Whichard on Monday at a home in the 2200 block of South Kansas, Davidson said in the news release.
“This was not a random incident. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office,” he wrote.
