Wichita man who allegedly took runaway girl for sex charged in federal court
A Kansas who man allegedly took a runaway girl from Missouri back to Kansas as part of a child sex crime case has been charged in federal court.
Kyle Ellery, 19, of Wichita, was indicted by a grand jury in U.S. District Court on Wednesday. The charges are transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and travel with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.
The indictment alleges that on Jan. 10, Ellery traveled from Kansas to Missouri to engage in sexual activity with a 14-year-old child, then on Jan. 11, he took the minor victim from Missouri to Kansas for sexual purposes.
Ellery was arrested Jan. 17 by Wichita police on suspicion of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, sexual exploitation of a child, aggravated interference with parental custody, contributing to a child’s misconduct
At the time, police said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had provided information about a 14-year-old runaway girl being in the city. She was found at a home in the 2700 block of North Amidon, and Ellery was arrested at a home in the 2300 block of North Sommerset.
Court records show that as part of the criminal case, federal prosecutors have filed for the forfeiture of Ellery’s Samsung phone, which was used in the commission of the alleged crimes.
U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release that if convicted, Ellery would face at least 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the transportation charge and up to 30 years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 on the traveling charge.
