Carjacker shot by Wichita police officer in McDonald’s drive-through heads to prison

A man shot by a Wichita police officer in a McDonald’s drive-through before carjacking an elderly couple is headed to federal prison for nearly six years.

Zachary Ausdemore, 30, of Wichita, was sentenced Monday to 70 months in prison after previously pleading guilty to carjacking, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release. Ausdemore had admitted to threatening to kill a husband and wife unless they gave him the keys to their vehicle.

The crime happened Sept. 10 in the aftermath of a WPD officer-involved shooting, according to court documents and police descriptions of the events.

Police were called by someone reporting that his brother’s Jeep, which had been stolen, was at the McDonald’s at 21st and Amidon. Officers found the stolen vehicle in the restaurant drive-through and ordered all three people inside to get out. Instead, the driver accelerated toward one of the officers, who feared personal injury and fired three shots from his gun.

Ausdemore was the front-seat passenger and a bullet hit his arm.

A police chase ensued, but ended when the Jeep crashed. James Stanford and Daphne Hays were arrested in the area, but Ausdemore got away. He stole an SUV from the elderly couple, who had gone outside their house to watch the chase.

Ausdemore was arrested after a second police chase ended when the stolen SUV got stuck in a muddy field.
