Wichita woman who dragged deputy while fleeing from traffic stop pleads guilty

A Wichita woman charged with dragging a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy as she fled from a traffic stop pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer in the case, according to Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Dan Dillon.

Authorities arrested 46-year-old Melissa Heinzman on July 9, more than two weeks after she ran over Deputy Sarah Sinnett’s left leg with an SUV. Heinzman fled after Sinnett told her she had a warrant for her arrest during the June 23 stop. Sinnett, who received a broken ankle and other injuries, was dragged when an item on her duty belt got caught on the vehicle.

Heinzman is scheduled for sentencing on March 5, Dillon said.
