Family of teen killed in Wichita homicide asks for help paying funeral expenses
The family of a teenager who was shot and killed Sunday is asking for help in paying for his funeral.
Donte Devore, 18, of Wichita, was killed when he got into a fight with armed intruders at his home, Wichita police said.
Three or four people armed with guns knocked on the front door of a house in the 900 block of South Pineridge on Sunday night and were let in, Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said. Devore then got in a fight with one of the armed people and was shot multiple times.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Donte, a son, a brother, an uncle, cousin, grandson, and friend of many lives was taken away by a senseless act of violence,” Sivea Devore wrote in a GoFundMe campaign. “Donte always cared about others and never failed to make people laugh. He was a joy to be around and touched many lives.”
Sivea Devore, who said she is Donte Devore’s older sister, is trying to raise $8,000 for funeral expenses in the GoFundMe campaign.
“Insurance will only cover $2,000 of the funeral expenses, so we ask for donations to cover the rest of the funeral expenses,” she wrote. “Anything helps, all funds will go to the funeral cost.”
Police arrested a 17-year-old early Monday morning near Lincoln and Rock and booked him into juvenile detention on suspicion of murder and other charges, Ojile said. He has not been identified.
Lascottric Lakeland Yarbrough, 18, was arrested Tuesday night in the 1000 block of North Harding. Booking reports show he is also accused of aggravated robbery and criminal possession of a firearm, which Officer Charley Davidson said are connected to the homicide.
A police report does not list any stolen property.
Davidson cited an active investigation when asked who shot and killed Devore and would not say whether or not more arrests are expected in the case.
Police ask anyone with information on the case to call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
