Good Deeds: Woman volunteers at United Way, Wichita Community Theatre

When Cindy Pursell retired from her civil service job three years ago, she had time on her hands.

She had already become an active volunteer at the Wichita Community Theatre.

“I went for the first time to that theater 10 years ago,” said Pursell, 57. “They were showing ‘An Evening of Culture,’ and it was about trailer trash putting on a production of Romeo and Juliet.

“It was way out there — just my kind of humor. And I thought, ‘People who do this can’t be all wrong.’ So, I volunteered and the next play I did was ‘On Golden Pond.’ ”

She also volunteers three times a week at the United Way of the Plains Warehouse at 314 N. Washington.

“The United Way gives me something to do on the days I am not working,” Pursell said. “It gets me out of the house and a reason to get up in the morning.”

Pursell also likes knowing that the volunteer work she does helps other people.

“At the warehouse, any 501(c)(3) (nonprofit) business can go there once a month and shop,” she said. “We put out merchandise, which can be overstock or returns or slightly used items. It ranges from food products, clothing, furniture, toilet paper and towels to anything.”
