3 QuikTrips among Wichita gas stations with fuel pump issues in June inspections
When you go to a gas station to fill up your tank, it is reasonable to expect you will receive all the fuel you paid for at the advertised price.
But sometimes problems pop up unexpectedly.
That’s why inspectors regularly test fuel pumps in Kansas every 18 months — totaling more than 20,000 gas pump inspections every year.
During these inspections, Kansas Department of Agriculture inspectors check to make sure dispensers and meters meet state regulations. This includes checking fuel quality, pricing accuracy and correct labeling.
About 95 to 97% of the time, the fuel pumps meet compliance standards, but sometimes they fail and are rejected by the state.
If a fuel pump fails, or is rejected, the gas station must repair it within 30 days or request an extension. Following the 30-day period, it will be reinspected.
“Common reasons a pump might fail is user requirement rejections which include but are not limited to maintenance of equipment, product storage identification, price posting/advertised pricing, product labeling, or dispenser fails to print receipt,” the fuel pump program manager told The Wichita Eagle.
In the month of June, the KDA Division of Weights and Measures completed 20 inspections at gas stations in Wichita. The inspections included follow-ups after previous rejections, regular quality control checks and a complaint investigation.
