A 50-year-old Wichita man on a motorcycle died in an accident Monday night in rural Sedgwick County, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning.

Layne Eberly left the road, went into the ditch, then hit a concrete wall and retracted metal gate along the east entrance of Lake Afton, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick. The area of the crash is roughly equal distance between and south of Goddard and Garden Plain.

“The wall he struck supports the metal retractable gate that can be used to close the east entrance of the lake at MacArthur Road,” Blick said in an email. “No signs of impairment were noted. His speed is unknown. The posted speed limit is 20 MPH.”

The accident was reported at 8:21 p.m. Monday. Eberly was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis with critical injuries before being pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m., the deputy wrote.
