Derby man, 30, killed in motorcycle-truck collision on K-42

A Derby man is dead after his motorcycle rear-ended a pickup truck on K-42 on Sunday night.

James C. Dunbar, 30, died at the scene of the crash, in the eastbound lanes of K-42 highway near Tyler Road.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Dunbar was driving a 2014 BMW sport bike motorcycle in the eastbound lanes of the highway when he hit the rear of a 1992 Dodge Dakota around 9:12 p.m. The impact caused the truck driver, 55-year-old Jerry N. Slay of Eureka, to lose control of the mid-sized pickup and roll into a ditch, where he was pinned until authorities rescued him.

Dunbar was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m. Slay was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The crash remained under investigation Monday, Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Myers said.
