Man stopped in Kansas had drug haul with 9 pounds fentanyl, 8 pounds heroin
A California man caught trafficking more than nine pounds of fentanyl and more than eight pounds of heroin through Kansas pleaded guilty to charges in federal court Thursday.
Authorities discovered the drug haul after they stopped Mauricio Canas’ car for a traffic violation on Aug. 21, 2019, in Thomas County, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister’s Office. The car was taking the drugs from California to New York, where they were to be sold, the office said.
Canas, 24, is scheduled for sentencing Oct. 22 on one count of interstate transportation in furtherance of drug trafficking and one count of using a phone in further of drug trafficking. He faces up to nine years in prison and a $500,000 maximum fine.
Heroin, an illicit opioid drug, may be lethal with one 30 milligram dose. Its synthetic cousin fentanyl is about 50 times more powerful and deadly with a 3 milligram dose.
