Wichita man changing his tire along interstate hit and killed by semi that drove away

A Wichita man who was changing a flat tire along the shoulder of a Kansas interstate was hit and killed by a semi that drove away from the scene of the crash, state troopers said.

Emergency crews were called at around 5:19 a.m. Tuesday to an injury accident on I-35 in Franklin County, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report.

Investigators determined a 2016 Kenworth semi was northbound in the right lane as a 2005 Chevy Impala was pulled over. The driver of the car was attempting to change a flat tire on the front driver’s side. The semi driver “failed to maintain lane, driving over the right white edge line, before striking” the man changing the tire, troopers wrote in the KHP report.

The driver of the semi kept driving until he was stopped by law enforcement near Gardner, troopers said. Gardner is about 15 miles away from the crash scene.

The wreck happened near the LeLoup exit, or about half a mile south of Tennessee Road, law enforcement officials said. That’s about 5 miles northeast of Ottawa.

The KHP crash report identified the man who died as Sidney Leroy Huff, 73, of Wichita. A 23-year-old Wichita man who was a passenger in the car had no apparent injury.

The driver of the semi was identified in the KHP report as Jerry W. Tiger, 51, of Wichita. He had no apparent injury.
