Speeding driver pulled from burning vehicle after I-70 crash, Kansas troopers say

A driver who had been speeding was rescued from a burning pickup that was upside-down after a crash on I-70 in western Kansas on Saturday, state troopers said.

Emergency crews in Trego County were called just before 6 p.m. to an injury accident in the westbound lanes of the interstate about 4 miles east of WaKeeney, the Kansas Highway Patrol said in a crash report.

Investigators determined the driver of a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 had been speeding westbound on I-70. The driver briefly lost control as the pickup left the roadway, but the driver was able to get back on the road. The truck then veered right, left the road and struck a guardrail.

The pickup then overturned and slid on the roof of the cab and hood before coming to a rest. The vehicle caught on fire before the driver was rescued, the KHP crash report states.

The driver was taken to Hays Medical Center for treatment of a suspected minor injury. Troopers identified him as Nicolas D. Garcia, 26, of WaKeeney.
