Original story:

Officers and detectives are investigating after a man was found dead in the street in west Wichita.

Emergency crews were called at around 9:05 p.m. Monday to what was reported as an injury accident at Central and Maize, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. She said that one person died at the scene.

Wichita police Lt. Mike Linnehan said that officers were called to reports of a person lying in the street. They found a man in his 30s in the southbound lanes of Maize Road. He was unresponsive and pronounced dead.

“We do not believe that he was hit by a vehicle,” Linnehan said. He did not say what police think happened.

Police said people in three vehicles stopped to try to help. Those witnesses did not know how the man ended up in the road.

As of early Tuesday morning, police did not know how the man died and did not know how officers would classify the death.

“We do not believe that any criminal act occurred here tonight,” Linnehan said.

The investigation is ongoing.
