West-side Mexican restaurant will move to bigger space, add a second menu
A west-side Mexican restaurant that’s gained a following since it opened nearly seven and a half years ago is about to move to a bigger spot nearby — and significantly add to its offerings.
Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant owner Pedro Guevara said that he recently signed a lease to take over the spot at 756 N. Tyler, which over the years has been home to Red Mesa Grill, Augustino Brewing Company, The Angry Elephant, Lito’s, and Eclipse Bar & Grill.
He hopes to have the restaurant open by September, he said. In the meantime, it will continue to operate at 602 N. Tyler, which is less than a half mile away from the new spot.
Don Piros of Landmark Commercial Real Estate handled the deal.
When he reopens the restaurant in the bigger building, Guevara said, he’ll serve all the menu items he’s always had plus a few more Mexican specialties. In addition, he’ll add a second menu filled with American dishes such as pizza, sandwiches, chicken-fried chicken, chicken tenders and wings.
“It’s going to be two menus on the table,” Guevara said. “That’s my idea.”
Guevara said that he needed a bigger space because his business has grown significantly.
“People have been waiting or left because we don’t have enough tables,” he said.
He’d also been having trouble with the air conditioning at his current address, he said.
He plans to take over both the bar side and the restaurant side of the spot at 756 N. Tyler. In the past, some tenants have leased only the restaurant side. The relocated restaurant will have a full bar and table-side service, just like at the current spot.
He’ll probably close the original restaurant a week or so before he opens in the new spot, he said.
Before opening Puerto Vallarta, Guevara worked as a chef in Wichita restaurants like YaYa’s Eurobistro and Jerseys Grill and Bar.
