Wichita fine-dining restaurant will close its doors at end of business on Sunday

Here’s some not-so-sweet news for fans of The Sweet Spot, the restaurant at 7703 E. Douglas.

On Wednesday evening, the restaurant shared a video on its Facebook page and other social media channels indicating that the restaurant would close for good at the end of business on Sunday. The video showed head chef Preston Darnell walking out of the front doors of the restaurant.

“Thank you for coming out and dining with us and sharing your experiences and your special occasions, wedding proposals, anniversaries, birthdays,” he said in the video. “We truly had a wonderful time serving you and being part of your experience.”

He encouraged customers to visit for one last Sunday brunch this weekend.

I’ve sent messages to both Darnell and the restaurant’s owner, Julie Yang, and will update this story if I hear back.

Yang and her husband, George, first opened The Sweet Spot — an upscale restaurant with a menu of steaks, pork, chicken and seafood dishes — in 2018 at 8448 West Central. In January 2025, they moved the restaurant to the former Doma restaurant space at 7703 E. Douglas.

The Yangs also own Wichita’s two KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot restaurants, which are at 7700 E. Kellogg and 2243 N. Tyler Road.

The Sweet Spot’s original location was 8448 W. Central, where N&J Cafe west now operates.

“Eight years of your love, loyalty, and support have meant the absolute world to us,” read the text on the post. “This journey would have been nothing without YOU. Every kind word, every visit, every moment shared — we will carry it all with us forever.”

The remaining hours for The Sweet Spot are 4 to 9 p.m. today; 4-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
