Wichita bar will close in six weeks. Owners cite declining spirit sales.
Wichita has a little more than a month left to visit Good Company Taps & Spirits in Delano.
The bar at 930 W. Douglas, which shares its space with Pennant Coffee and comes to life in the evenings, is closing at the end of July, one of the owners said.
Pennant Coffee, which has the same owners, will continue operating.
“We are truly devastated, and we know you will be as well,” read an Instagram post that went up on Wednesday. “The last 4 years have been an incredible experience for all of us, and while we are deeply proud of everything we’ve done here, the time has come to move on.”
Caleb Porter, one of the owners of Good Company and Pennant, said that the business landscape for alcohol purveyors had changed dramatically since the bar originally opened in 2022 Most notably, he said, spirit sales in the United States have significantly decreased, and small bars and restaurants have been hit hardest.
“I feel like during COVID, people found themselves drinking too much,” he said. “And then the pendulum definitely swung the other way.”
He encouraged people to visit Good Company during the next six weeks, adding that the bar would throw a going-away party on Aug. 1. Until then, bar customers should expect more a limited selection as the owners try to clear out their bar stock.
The bar made its announcement so far in advance of its actual closing, Porter said, to give employees who won’t be staying to work at Pennant time to find other jobs.
Good Company had a strong base of support, he said, but the bar just wasn’t consistently busy, especially during the week.
He said that, since the announcement of the closing was made, people have been telling him how much they loved Good Company, which has been nice to hear but also somewhat frustrating.
“This is why you have to relentlessly support people you like over chains,” he said. “Unfortunately, we’re going to be one of those businesses that people really loved that wasn’t able to continue on. Hopefully people will change their habits and really think about where they're spending their dollars.”
Good Company, owned by Porter, Andrew Schwartz and Nick Unruh, has been operating in the back half of the Pennant Space since summer 2024 serving craft cocktails and Detroit-style pizza. But the bar originally opened in 2022 at Revolutsia, the shipping container mall at 2721 E. Central.
The bar is known for its Thursday vinyl nights, where different people serve as DJ for the evening and spin their favorite records. Those will continue through closing, Porter said.
After Good Company closes, Pennant will continue to serve breakfast pizza, but the dinner pizza will no longer be available. The coffee shop, which closes at 4 p.m., may eventually get later hours, he said.
Through closing day, Good Company will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and from 4 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
