Today is final day for 50-year-old Wichita restaurant at its current address
If you have any attachment to the La Chinita Mexican Restaurant space at 1051 N. Broadway, today is your last day to visit.
After service today, the restaurant will close so that its owners can pack up the dining room and move to a new space: the former Want Bierock Company spot at 2615 W. 13th St. The restaurant will reopen in the new space on Thursday.
Owners had originally planned to make the move in time for Cinco de Mayo but were delayed by permitting issues. But now, they’re ready, said co-owner Abraham Sebastian, adding that Thursday’s grand-reopening will be extra special because that day is also his father and fellow owner Eddy’s birthday.
On opening day, the restaurant will offer $1 street tacos and drink specials. Customers also will be able to enjoy live mariachi music.
In March, La Chinita owners began sharing the news with customers that they were leaving North Broadway, where they’d been since 2019, partly because customers had begun to feel unsafe in the area. They also liked that they’d be able to purchase the building on 13th Street, which originally operated as a McDonald’s. They’re leasing the building on North Broadway, which was built to house a Burger King.
Operating out of former fast-food-restaurants buildings for La Chinita, the owners said. Their current space has a drive-through lane, which the restaurant uses for pickup orders, and the new one does, too.
This will be La Chinita’s second move. When it first opened in 1976, it operated at 1451 N. Broadway. The original La Chinita building was later demolished.
The restaurant will be open on North Broadway until 8 p.m. tonight.
