Former Peerless space in Wichita has a new tenant, and it opens tonight
A new bar has taken over the space at 919 E. Douglas left vacant when Peerless closed in October.
The Pit, a new venture by Ali Kibar, will open in the space tonight and will have events all weekend, including a brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The bar’s tagline: “Wichita’s underground in Old Town.”
Frank Fury, who along with Alex Martinez is helping Kibar open The Pit, said it will be a place that builds community.
The Pit also will be a place where people can dance to electronic music, thrash to metal bands and take in a comedy show.
“Ali is a pretty community-minded individual, and so am I,” said Fury, noting that people have become detached from one another in the age of social media. “We’re kind of giving people a place to be.”
The Pit will offer live bands on Thursdays, leaning toward groups that play industrial punk and thrash metal music. On weekends, it’ll invite DJs to play electronic dance music.
Live comedians will frequently perform on Wednesdays, and on Sundays, a DJ will play relaxed Arabic and Afro House music while people gather to enjoy food and drinks such as mimosas, bloody marys and screwdrivers. Though The Pit doesn’t have a kitchen, it’s worked out a deal with nearby restaurant Emerson Biggins, who will bring food to people who order via a QR code. Fury says he’s looking for another regular food vendor as well.
The weekly brunch will be called “New Dawn.”
The staff is still trying to decide what the bar’s exact hours will be, but its opening weekend is set. The Pit will be open for the first time tonight from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Admission is free before 10 p.m. and $15 after 10 p.m. Re-entry costs $5.
