Tuesday is opening day for new restaurant, which will operate in a familiar spot
Tuesday is opening day for a new restaurant specializing in Nepali and Indian dishes — and to entice customers to try it, the owner is offering customers a 15% discount on their bills throughout the month of June.
Ram Basnet is the owner of Himalayan Sherpa Indian & Nepali Cuisine, which has taken over the former DeFazio’s building at 2706 N. Amidon. The space has been vacant since Sam’s Southern Eatery closed last year.
Basnet, who also has an Indian restaurant in Windsor, Colorado, called Street of India, said that he was looking for a nearby market where he could open another restaurant and settled on Wichita.
His new place will be full service and will have seating for 150, he said. The menu, which is posted below, includes things like Nepali momo (stuffed dumplings), Indian curry dishes and fresh-made naan offered in a variety of flavors, such as garlic, cheese or onion.
The menu also includes a vegetarian section that lists dishes such as kale eggplant curry and mushroom matar. Tandoori chicken, tandoori shrimp and kabobs also will be served.
Based on feedback from social media, Basnet said, he thinks that the restaurant’s biryani rice dishes will be popular as will its chow mein dishes, which are made with homemade dumpling noodles and choice of chicken, shrimp or vegetables.
The new restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Wichita’s last Himalayan restaurant was called Himali Eats, and it operated at 3832 E Douglas from 2020 to 2024. Owners Rita Rai and Tashi Sherpa specialized in momo, which are hand-made dumplings seasoned with Nepali spices. The couple closed the restaurant after they had a baby, and life got too hectic.
