A new Wichita restaurant has just opened in the old Angelo’s space
Friday was opening day for a new Wichita Japanese restaurant designed for grab-and-go diners.
Tokizo, a venture by first-time restaurateur Emiko Togashi, is now serving sushi and other Japanese fare at 5231 E. Central, but the food is available only for take out.
The restaurant space, which is in the Central Plaza strip center, is best known for housing Angelo’s from when it first reopened in 2016 until it moved to 5900 E. Central in 2021. Tokizo, though, is using only half of the Angelo’s space — the half without customer restrooms.
The restaurant also doesn’t have any dine-in seating, but it does have seats in a small lobby where people can wait for their food. The menu includes sushi rolls, onigiri rice balls and other Japanese dishes, such as udon noodles. (On Monday, Togashi said she was out of the tuna cup sushi and eel cup sushi because her fish delivery did not come through.)
Togashi, who was born in Tokyo and grew up in Hiroshima, worked as a manager of restaurants in Indiana and Wisconsin earlier in her life and had dreamed about owning her own place for a decade. She’ll serve as the restaurant’s chef.
She named the restaurant after her grandfather’s brother. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. daily with the exception of Wednesdays, when the restaurant will be closed.
