A member of Wichita’s Coleman family is getting into the restaurant business
Construction is now underway on Wichita’s third Mokas Coffee & Eatery, at 3851 N. Ridge Road. This week, the owner of Mokas’ parent company, JRI Hospitality, said that the shop should be ready to open in March or early April just north of the strip center on the northwest corner of 37th North and Ridge.
And that’s not the only recent news about Mokas, which started as a single coffee shop in Salina in 2005 and has since grown into a chain that has locations not only in Wichita and Salina but also in Colby and in Phoenix and Glendale, Arizona.
Mokas recently announced that it had signed on its first franchisee. Christian Coleman, son of Sheldon Coleman, recently signed a six-unit agreement to build Mokas stores in the Kansas City metro, Lawrence and Topeka markets. He plans to open his first store in Olathe in March.
Sheldon Coleman is the onetime CEO of Wichita’s Coleman Co. who later started the now-defunct Big Dog Motorcycles. Along with his family, Christian Coleman co-founded the Sunnyland Kansas company, which developed a 20,000-square-foot industrial hemp drying facility in Newton. Christian Coleman designed the world’s first high-producing, zero-waste hemp dryer/separator.
Mokas serves coffee drinks, smoothies, energy drinks, pastries, sandwiches, soups and salad.
Its first Wichita store opened in February 2022 at 143 N. McLean, and the second one opened at 1344 E. Veranda Drive, near 13th and Webb, in September 2024.
In addition to the new Mokas on North Ridge Road, the company says it has another location planned for Wichita and one for Hays.
