The restaurant space that Jose Pepper’s vacated three years ago has a new dining tenant, and opening day is this weekend.

The spot at 2243 N. Tyler is now occupied by Wichita’s second KPOT, which is an all-you-can eat Asian Hot Pot and Korean barbecue chain. Franchisees Julie and George Yang opened Wichita’s first KPOT to big crowds and long waits last October at Towne East Square.

The owners will be putting on their “soft opening” event for friends and family on Friday, but if space is available, they’ll also seat members of the public. Starting on Saturday, the restaurant will be fully open to the public.

KPOT, a chain that has nearly 170 restaurants across the country, invites diners to build their own Korean-style BBQ or hot pot meals. Diners get raw, seasoned meat, seafood and veggies that they either cook themselves on a grill built into the center of the table or boil themselves in broth that’s simmering on hot plates built into the table.

Those who pick the barbecue option can choose from several different types of beef, chicken, pork, seafood and veggies. Those who want to make hot pot soup choose a soup base with choices like Thai Tom Yum, Japanese Miso, tomato and “healthy herbs.” They then can pick which meats, seafood, veggies, tofu and noodles they want.

Customers pay a flat price for the all-you-can-eat meals. A timer is set, and, using a tablet that’s left at the table, they can reorder as many times as they want before the timer goes off. There’s also a self-serve bar where customers can load up on sauces, herbs and other extras.

The all-you-can-eat meals are $20.99 at lunch and $30.99 at dinner for barbecue or hot pot, with a $5 upcharge if you want both. The restaurant also has a full bar that offers sake plus various beers, wines and craft cocktails.

The west KPOT will have the same hours as the east one does: noon to 10:30 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and noon to 11:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The last seating happens one hour before closing every day.

The Yangs also are the owners of The Sweet Spot, a fine dining restaurant at 7703 E. Douglas.

Jose Pepper’s, an Overland Park-based Mexican food chain, operated at the address for a decade. There’s still a Jose Pepper’s restaurant at 11423 E. 13th St., in operation since August 2009.
