One Wichita-area Starbucks is among hundreds being closed nationwide

You may have read that coffee chain Starbucks announced on Thursday plans to close hundreds of stores this month — about 1% of its locations in North America.

I’m working to find out how many stores in the Wichita area will be affected, and so far, I can find just one: An employee at the Goddard Starbucks, which just opened two years ago, said that the store will close for good at the end of business on Saturday.

Employees contacted at a couple of other local stores said that they’re being told the Goddard Starbucks might be the only one in the Wichita area that will be closing. The Starbucks media team responded to a question about Wichita-area closings by saying only that signs would appear on the doors of stores being shut down and that customers would be notified via email.

The announcement by Starbucks chairman and CEO Brian Niccol, which was shared on the chain’s website, said that the company had identified for closure “coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance.”

Goddard’s Starbucks is in the Goddard Galleria, a mixed-use development along Kellogg between 183rd and West Street. It opened in September 2023.

The announcement said that Starbucks would try to find spots in other stores for affected employees.

I’ll update this post if I learn that any other local Starbucks will be affected. If you hear of any, email me at dneil@wichitaeagle.com
