Super buffets come. Super buffets go.

In this case, both are happening about two weeks apart.

First, the closing: Friday was the last day in business for the China Star Super Buffet restaurant at 5825 W. Central Ave., which Hank Luc first opened on March 1, 1999. The owners did not return a message inquiring about the reason for the closing.

China Star Super Buffet was known for its multiple buffet lines, which offered dozens of items, including shrimp and crab legs plus traditional dishes like sesame chicken, beef and broccoli and lo mein. The restaurant also was once known for its incredibly campy commercials.

Those who are willing to drive to the east-side, though, will soon be able to find a new super buffet option.

George and Julie Yang have chosen March 10 as the opening day for their new super buffet restaurant, which will be called Super East and will operate on the perimeter of Towne East Square.

The couple, who own The Sweet Spot at 7703 E. Douglas, also bought the long-vacant building next door when they relocated The Sweet Spot from its old address on West Central to the vacant Doma building.

The neighboring building, whose address is 7607 E. Douglas, most recently was home to another super buffet that was actually named Super Buffet. It opened in 2007 but closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The building originally went up in 1983 to house Joe Kelly’s Oyster Dock, which lasted until 2004.

The Yangs have been remodeling the building for the restaurant, which will also serve sushi. Its hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
