The sign taped to the door at Fonda La Chona, 1210 W. Pawnee, says that the restaurant is closed for remodeling.

But it appears that it’s actually closed for good.

The restaurant, owned by Serjio Valadez and Alma Cerrillo, is listed on Google as being permanently closed. An employee that answered the phone at the owners’ other restaurant, Taqueria La Chona at 3415 E. Harry, confirmed that the sister restaurant was no longer in business. (Taqueria La Chona is still operating, though.)

I’ve reached out to Valadez for details but have not yet heard back.

The owners started in Wichita with a taco truck specializing in the flavors of Jalisco, Mexico, that they would set up in the parking lot of a Mexican market on West Central. In early 2020, they expanded and opened a Taqueria La Chona in the shadow of St. Joseph Hospital.

That restaurant earned a following, and the owners decided to expand their business with a full-service, sit-down restaurant. They took over the former Jimmy’s Egg space near Seneca and Pawnee and opened Fonda La Chona in late 2022.

The last post from the restaurant on social media went up on Sunday, so the closing happened sometime this week.

I’ll let you know if I hear back from Valadez.
