Wichita’s first location of this chain will offer food that’s healthy, ‘Instagram worthy’
A restaurant that will open early next month on the east side of Wichita will serve food that’s healthy but also “Instagram worthy,” its owner says.
Kalene Hoffmann says she’s chosen Saturday, Sept, 7, as the opening day for Wichita’s first location of Toastique — part of a Washington, D.C., based restaurant chain — at Wichita’s Cambridge Market, 21st and Webb. The address is 9747 E. 21st St., and the restaurant is just a couple of doors down from Hoffmann’s other business, Bodybar Pilates East.
Toastique’s menu offers fancy toast creations, acai bowls and smoothies, and the chain insists that the dishes its customers get look as good as they taste, Hoffmann said.
“Our food is so aesthetically pleasing,” she said. “The founder, that’s what she wants. Down to the way we slice the bananas, everything is done with intention and perfection, so not only does it taste good, but it’s Instagram worthy.”
Hoffmann and her general manager, Merci Sweatt, gave me a sneak preview of the space this week. It’s taken over the Cambridge Market suite where charcuterie business Graze Craze had originally planned to open its second Wichita location but never did.
The business is bright and sleek with a shiny concrete floor and white and wood-tone finishes. Customers will order their food at a counter that greets them at the entrance, then they can try to grab one of the dining room’s 26 seats.
The menu, which you can see below, offers gourmet toast dishes like the Avocado Smash, which features multigrain toast topped with avocado, watermelon radishes, marinated tomatoes, chili oil and micro greens, or the Spicy Crab, which features “rustico” toast topped with lump crab meat, melted Swiss and fontina cheeses, sriracha aioli, tomato, lettuce, jalapeno and micro greens. All toast dishes will be served on personal-sized charcuterie boards.
Customers also can choose from seven different acai bowls, including the PB+B made with a blend of acai, banana, blueberry, peanut butter and almond milk and topped with fresh fruit, peanut butter, chopped dates, peanuts and granola. The menu also offers overnight oats spiked with fruits and sweetened with healthy drizzles.
Smoothies come in flavors like orange crush and gingerberry, and the shop also offers cold-pressed juices and a full menu of espresso drinks and teas.
It also will serve alcohol, including “frosé” — which is essentially frozen rosé wine prepared in a special machine on site — plus pina coladas, mimosas, bloody marys and margaritas.
The restaurant’s hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It will open at 8 a.m. on opening day, Sept. 7. That day, the first 100 people in line who spend at least $10 will get $50 Toastique Reward Dollars added to their loyalty accounts on the Toastique app.
The Toastique chain has more than two dozen locations across the country and many more about to open.
Hoffmann said she first heard about Toastique from a friend who visited one in Colorado a couple of years ago. She was blown away by the food photos her friend showed her and read up on franchising opportunities.
She hopes to open two more Toastique restaurants in Wichita and is already looking at downtown properties. She also hopes to find a space on the west side. But she has to have her first location open for three months before the corporate office would approve an additional shop.
Sweatt, the general manager, says the menu’s PB+B Bowl and Spicy Crab toast are her two favorite dishes at Toastique.
“We’re super excited to bring healthy food and lifestyles to Wichita,” Sweatt said.
