With latest closing, Wichita business owner is down to one restaurant. He used to have 6.
Wichita is down to one Mr. Miyagi restaurant, and the original owner is not a part of it.
Henry Son’s Mr. Miyagi Japanese restaurant at 4041 N. Maize Road, open since December 2021, closed on Tuesday, according to its manager. Just a few weeks ago, the restaurant had announced that it was adding the pho soup from another just-closed, Son-owned restaurant — Pho King ICT — to its menu.
At one point, Son had three Mr. Miyagi restaurants in Wichita. He recently sold the original at 3920 E. Harry to new owners, who kept the name but upgraded the dining room and said they plan to add more items to the menu.
The Maize Road location was the second Mr. Miyagi restaurant, and Son added a third at 3130 N. Rock Road in 2022, but it closed in November 2023. The Easy Egg has since taken over the Rock Road space.
Mr. Miyagi restaurants sold fried rice and hibachi meals, and the concept grew in popularity during the summer of 2021.
Son — who did not return calls or messages — also owned Chick’N Pop at 3233 E. Harry and Pho King ICT at 4857 E. Harry, which both closed in mid-June. He also is the owner of Old Tokyo Steakhouse at 6821 W. Taft.
The Mr. Miyagi West manager said that seven people are out of jobs with two day’s notice.
