A Wichita taco and burrito restaurant has suddenly closed after a year in business
A Wichita taco restaurant that had a big social media presence has closed after a little more than a year in business.
Kiko’s, which has operated in Wichita since February of 2021, has vacated the building at 2800 E. Central, the landlord confirmed. The owner has sold the lease and equipment to a new operator, who will soon open a different restaurant concept in the space.
That restaurant owner is not yet ready to share details but will soon, he said.
Carlos Fernandez Jr. is the owner of Kiko’s, which started in Newton in 2018 then expanded to Wichita. He’s the grandson of the late Francisco Rizo, who founded Chico’s Mexican Restaurant in 1974.
Earlier this month, the restaurant’s Facebook page hinted at possible trouble. A post from April 5 read, “Who wants Kikos to stay in Wichita? Times ain’t easy, so we looking for our loyals.”
I’ve left messages for Fernandez but have not heard back yet. His Newton restaurant is still operating.
I’m also checking on the fate of the tequila bar Fernandez was planning for the former Mimi’s space in Old Town Square. He announced plans for the concept on Facebook in November, but there’s been no movement since.
