Old Town Square in Wichita will be down a restaurant by the end of the week
Attention aspiring restaurant owners: Old Town Square is about to have a vacancy.
Late last week, the owners of Mimi’s OldTown Mexican Restaurant at 321 N. Mead announced that their last day in business would be Jan. 25, which is this Saturday.
“As many as you know, the owner suffered from major health problems in 2019,” said a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. “He has decided it is time to focus on his health and spend time with family. Thanks for all your support and come and see us one final time to say goodbye.”
The restaurant has operated in the space in between Todd Brian’s Brick Street Cafe & Tavern and Hana Cafe (soon to be called just Hana) since 2015. It’s owned by Alejandro Ziad, who initially opened the restaurant with his brother-in-law, Eduardo Sebastian, as a second location of La Chinita.
But the two had a falling out, and Ziad changed the name. He went through a few incarnations before settling on Mimi’s.
Zaid’s daughter, Mimi Zaid, said that her father has suffered serious heart problems and his doctor has advised him to lead a more stress-free life. Her mother, Noemi, who was the longtime cook for La Chinita, is ready to retire, she said.
The restaurant is right across the square from the Wichita Eagle offices, and I have at least a few colleagues who will miss getting their street tacos to go.
