One Wichita building that until recently held two restaurants is now vacant.

As of last weekend, Sam’s Southern Eatery, which had operated in the former Marco’s Cantina space at 6600 W. Central since January 2020, is closed. Its last day was Sunday.

Additionally, the taco restaurant that briefly operated in the space adjacent to Sam’s Southern Eatery — where The Green Olive was for five years until its owner decided to move the restaurant to a bigger space last May — also has closed. Taqueria Las Tres Nenas owner Maria Martinez, who first opened the restaurant in July, said that she quietly closed it last month.

She wasn’t getting enough business in the space, she said, and her lease was up. She’s considering looking for another spot where she can reopen her taqueria, which offered tacos, sopes, tostadas, tortas, menudo and more.

I’ve been unable to reach the proprietors of Sam’s Southern Eatery, which closed for extended periods more than once during the pandemic. It was part of a chain that originated in Shreveport, Louisiana, specializing in catfish, crab cakes, fried oysters and more.

There’s still a Sam’s Southern Eatery in Hutchinson. The restaurant in Emporia closed in February.

Building owner Sam Eddine, who ran his Marco’s Cantina in the west half of the restaurant from 1995 to 2019, said he’s now looking for a new tenant for the Sam’s Southern Eatery space, though he’s leased the taco space to a new restaurant tenant. I’ll keep you posted.
