A competing Wichita taco chain is taking over the space Taco Bueno just abandoned

Another closed Taco Bueno restaurant, another takeover from a competing taco chain.

Earlier this month, I reported that Wichita’s last remaining Taco Bueno restaurant, the one at 3530 N. Rock Road, appeared to have closed for good.

Now, there’s news that the restaurant space will soon have a new taco tenant.

On Friday, Greg White and his Taco Tico partners signed a lease to take over the building, and they hope to have a restaurant open there by late September or early October.

Troy Farha of NAI Martens brokered the deal.

The new restaurant will be the eighth Taco Tico in the Wichita area for White and his group. They also have the two Wichita restaurants — at 460 N. West St. and at 13th and Tyler — plus restaurants in El Dorado, Newton, Arkansas City, Derby and Augusta.

White said that he’s long wanted to get a Taco Tico back on the east side. Until 2011, one was operating at 3131 N. Rock Road, where Popeye’s is now.

“We’ve been wanting to get back up there again,” he said. “Back in the day, North Rock Road was pretty successful for us.”

The restaurant space won’t require extensive remodeling since it was already set up as a fast-food taco restaurant, White said.

Taco fans might remember that last year, Taco Shop took over the abandoned Taco Bueno space at Central and Hillside. At one time, Wichita had six Taco Bueno restaurants. The company filed for bankruptcy in late 2018.

Stay tuned for details as opening day for the new Taco Tico draws closer.
