Wichita loses three restaurant/bars that were known for their unique attractions

Three Wichita bars, a couple of which also served food, have closed over the past few weeks.

Here is a look at the places Wichitans can no longer visit, at least for now:

Magoos Bar & Grill, 2304 S. Oliver: It opened back in 2006, but over the weekend, the owners of Magoos Bar & Grill announced on Facebook that the business was “closed until further notice.” I wrote to the bar and was given a contact name and number but have not been able to get anyone on the phone.

Magoos, which was known for its karaoke, was in the news in September after a deadly shooting happened in its parking lot, police said, leaving one man dead after a fight broke out after a birthday party in the bar.

The bar’s popular karaoke provider, Sing in Wichita with Barb and Friends, posted on Facebook that it will move to Casey’s Bar and Grill, 3207 S. Oliver, starting on Nov. 22.

1985 Arcade Bar + Grill, 1021 W. Maple: The bar at Seneca and Maple that opened in February — and that famously featured a mural of Doc Brown and Marty McFly — has been closed for several weeks, and now there’s a “for lease” sign in the window.

Scott Stickney, a longtime video game repairman, opened the bar, which featured about 20 retro arcade games and 10 pinball machines. He didn’t return a message asking about the closing.

Funky Monkeys Shaved Ice 21+ J.D. Young’s new location for his Funky Monkeys Shaved Ice 21+ was shortlived. He opened the spot, which sold alcohol-infused shaved ice drinks, in June at 216 N. Washington, and earlier this month, he posted that he was closing the space, saying it “wasn’t able to sustain itself in the Wichita market.”

Young did not return messages I left asking about the closing, but his Facebook post said that the shop was “definitely not the last” of the business.

Young moved the bar to the 3,200-square-foot space from one of the Union Station canopies where he originally opened in 2017.
