New Wichita business is serving British pub fare like fish and chips, bangers and mash
Yet another new business has rolled into Wichita specializing in fish and chips, but this one also serves British pub fare including Bangers and Mash and Shepherd’s Pie.
Joseph Straub has just opened a new food truck called The Royal Food Truck & Catering, and it first hit the streets earlier this month. It specializes in the type of British fare Straub served when he lived in London several years ago and worked in a pub kitchen.
He decided to open his own food truck earlier this year when his family’s farm implement business — Great Bend-based Straub International — was sold and Straub found himself open to pursue a new career. He’d always had a passion for cooking, and he knew his way around a basket of fish and chips.
“It just seemed like the right time to jump in and do something,” Straub said. “The food truck atmosphere in Wichita is just awesome. So we went out and bought a truck, and here we are.”
For now, the menu is focused on the above mentioned “pub classics” plus Poutine Tots and Fish and Chip Tacos. Straub said that he doesn’t plan to focus his menu on British pub food, alone, though. He wants to be flexible and plans to also serve things like lettuce wraps, burgers, soups and meat pies. (You can see the current menu below.)
Straub said he’s signed up with the Wichita Food Truck Coalition and soon will be added to the rotation at the various pop up parks in town. He also wants to participate in the local food truck rallies and last weekend was set up at the West Side Food Truck Rally at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
He’s also available for caterings and private parties and he also provides private in-home chef services.
This weekend, Straub is taking the truck to his former hometown of Great Bend to set up at a festival. He is working on finalizing some stops for next week in Wichita, though, and says he’ll update the truck’s social media as soon as he does.
Fish and chips might be having a moment in Wichita.
A couple of weeks ago, I reported on the arrival of On the Hook Fish and Chips, an established food truck chain that started in Wyoming and came through Wichita early this month. Despite the rainy, cold day when they were here, people stood in long lines to get an order of fish and chips.
The owners promised to come back through if the first trip went well, but so far, there’s nothing on the calendar.
