A big outdoor ice-skating rink will open in downtown Wichita this holiday season
Downtown Wichita will have its own 60 x 90-foot ice rink this holiday season, courtesy of Movement Musick, the Chase Koch-founded non-profit that also puts on the Somewhere Fest music festival and conference.
The rink, which will be set up in the Coleman parking lot at 250 S. St. Francis from Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, through Jan. 4, will be part of a bigger event called Somewhere in Winter, which will include holiday markets that will feature local vendors, food trucks and s’mores stations.
The rink will be brought in by a company called Magic Ice, which specializes in seasonal ice rinks. Around the rink will be pop-up activities, food and drink and igloos for rent.
The event also will include Christmas markets that will be put on in conjunction with the Old Town Farm and Art Market. They’ll take place on Saturdays from Nov. 29 through Dec. 20 in the northeast corner of the Coleman lot.
The ice rink will have themed nights. Organizers will charge admission and ice skate rentals will be available.
More details will be announced in the coming weeks, but a spokesperson said on Wednesday that the rink will be open nightly and will have extended hours on the weekends plus extended holiday hours starting the week of Dec. 22.
Organizers also said on Wednesday that the dates for the next Somewhere Festival & Conference will be Sept. 25-26. It will mark the third year for the event, which features multiple music acts playing across several Wichita venues as well as a conference that includes workshops and panels led by music industry professionals.
Chase Koch recently purchased several downtown properties, including the former Loony Bin spots at 217 and 219 N. St. Francis, which sit across the street from the Coleman lot. He’s the son of Charles and Liz Koch and serves as the executive vice president at his family’s Koch Inc.
Wichita has one other seasonal ice rink: Since 2019, pickleball venue Chicken N Pickle at 13th and Greenwich has been operating a 100 foot x 60 foot outdoor ice rink from late November through late February.
