Wichitan Austin Bahner, Shockers coach Steve Rainbolt help United States win Thorpe Cup decathlon

Wichitan Austin Bahner placed seventh in the Thorpe Cup decathlon with 7,593 points to help the United States defeat Germany in the dual competition on Saturday.

Wichita State coach Steve Rainbolt coached the United States, which won the decathlon with 38,845 points to Germany’s 37,427 in Fayetteville, Ark. The United States women won the heptathlon with 18,320 points to Germany’s 16,421.

Bahner, a former Wichita State and Heights High athlete, placed sixth among United States athletes. He placed third in the 100 meters with a time of 10.74 seconds and second in the long jump at 23 feet, 7 1/2 inches. He also finished third in the discus ((143-9) and tied for third in the pole vault (15-11).

Scott Filip won the decathlon with 7,876 points. Tim Nowak led Germany with 7,614 points and finished sixth. Chantae McMillan of the United States won the heptathlon with 6,260 points.

Bahner finished ninth in the 2014 Thorpe Cup.
