Cincinnati beats WSU baseball again
A nightmarish ninth inning sent Wichita State to another American Athletic Conference series loss Sunday at Eck Stadium.
Cincinnati scored three runs on two hits in the ninth and defeated Wichita State 5-1, taking two of three games this weekend.
Leading 2-1, Eric Santiago reached first on catcher’s interference by Noah Croft. Dondrae Bremner bunted back to the mound, trying to sacrifice. Reliever Chandler Sanburn fell down after fielding the ball, leaving runners at first and second with none out.
Treg Haberkorn followed with a three-run homer, and WSU (29-16, 6-12) lost its fifth of six AAC series.
Alec Bohm got the Shockers ahead in the first with his 10th homer of the season. WSU has lost just three times in 23 game when it scored first.
The Shockers had chances to score in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh, they drew two walks, but Trey Vickers hit into a fielder’s choice for the third out with Gunnar Troutwine at second.
In the eighth, Ross Cadena walked to open the inning, then Luke Ritter hit into a double play. Travis Young walked, but Bohm bounced back to the pitcher for the third out.
During the series, WSU hit into 10 double plays and one triple play.
