Wichita State volleyball defeats Belmont to sweep through tournament
Wichita State’s volleyball team is 3-0 for the first time since 2008 after Sunday’s sweep of Belmont.
The Shockers defeated the Bruins 25-20, 25-13, 25-23 in the LUV Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. They recorded 3-0 wins over host Lipscomb, which later defeated No. 24 Arizona, and East Tennessee State on Saturday.
Tabitha Brown led WSU with 10 kills and 11 digs and recorded a .333 attack percentage. Abbie Lehman added eight kills and Mikaela Raudsepp six.
Setter Emily Hiebert recorded 26 assists, nine digs and three blocks.
WSU trailed 14-11 in the first set before taking a 20-19 lead and finishing on a 7-1 run. It hit .345 in the second set and finished with an 8-0 run. In the third set, a kill by Lehman and an ace by Jenny Whitledge broke a 23-all tie.
The Shockers held Belmont (3-1) to an .045 attack percentage. Arianna Person led the Bruins with 10 kills.
Wichita State last started the season with three wins in 2008 on its way to a 29-match streak. The Shockers defeated Cal Poly, Oklahoma and Michigan State in the Sooners Legend Invitational.
