Letters on state economy, pro-life, Trumpenstein

Another view on state economy

The Eagle and other liberal newspapers are so busy bashing Gov. Sam Brownback that they will not report anything positive. Forbes magazine recently gave another view of the Kansas tax initiative in a commentary by Missouri businessman Rex Sinquefield titled, “Kansas: An Unsung Hero for Economic Growth.”

Sinquefield wrote: “Every year since the tax cuts were implemented, Kansas has surpassed the state record for new business formations. When we consider that startups have decreased nationwide since the Great Recession of 2008, this achievement is particularly remarkable. What’s more, the Kansas unemployment rate stands at 3.7 percent – the lowest the state has seen since 2001, and below the national average of 5.5 percent.”

Sinquefield added that Brownback “put his faith in the private sector to grow the Kansas economy rather than the government.”

Recently, aircraft supplier Triumph Group announced it would relocate its plant from Missouri to Kansas (July 26 Eagle). Did you see that in the news?

We don’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending, duplication and waste problem. Every government entity keeps demanding more and more money. Government and special-interest groups are never satisfied, and grow unchecked without accountability.

We should support those who are trying to protect the taxpaying citizens of Kansas, instead of allowing the press to continually vilify them.

Really pro-life?

It disturbs me when my Catholic friends, of which I have many, vote for extreme, ultra-right-wing politicians. To me, these politicians seem to have an agenda of destroying our society. They seem to not care about our schools, the sick, our workers, and many, many other people in need.

Often, my friends’ stated reason for voting these people into office is that they are pro-life. But to me, if you are for the death penalty, you are not pro-life. If you were for the Iraq War, you were not pro-life.

At the start of that war, I saw people doing their yearly protests against abortion, but I saw none of them protesting this war that saw more than half a million innocent, noncombatant people killed. And to me, if you close down a hospital because you don’t want to accept federal money to keep it open, you are not pro-life.

There is an insane amount of killing going on in the United States now – heartbreaking, mind-numbing killing. To allow that killing is not pro-life. Yet our country holds guns as sacred, and killing as a sacrament. War is a religion, and if we can’t have war in foreign countries, we will have it here. War is not pro-life. It never was.

To be pro-life means a lot more than stopping abortions.

Trump lives

I’m sure every good Republican remembers the story of the scientist who wanted to help mankind by building a “superperson” out of discarded human parts. The “person” would use his powers to make the world a better place. When he was brought to life, he turned on his creator and became a monster bent on destruction.

I believe the title was “Trumpenstein.”
