Letters to the Editor (Jan. 15)
Church helping city’s homeless
There is a changing of the guard happening at the Chisholm Trail Church of Christ. For 26 years, a service group of 10 to 15 has been led by Elnita Johnson, who’s small in stature but fearless and loving. Johnson is 78 and humbly handed her responsibilities over to Erica Adkins, who has worked in the group.
Johnson was instrumental in starting a homeless feeding program among the Wichita area churches of Christ. The group serves in parks downtown on Mondays from April through November. They serve meals your grandmother fixed — warm and tasty. No one is every asked for money or identification. They do this work to please God so that he will give them their rewards.
Several group members have passed over the years but others have joined to keep it going strong.

The decision about Bibles
The Herington school superintendent was quoted as saying, “Our district respects all religious beliefs and the constitutional rights of every student... we will no longer allow distribution of religious materials.”
We could paraphrase this by saying, “Our district respects all dietary practices... we will no longer allow distribution of food.” Or perhaps, “Our district respects all religious practices, (except the ones the country was founded on) therefore we will discriminate against this particular religion.”
I don’t know if the superintendent’s statement was an oxymoron, but it was definitely moronic.

The probability of losing
I don't play the lottery, except when the big jackpot gets up around $400 million or above. Then probability suggests I should buy one ticket: probability says you should invest in a game of chance no more than the expectation value of what you’ll win.
Powerball has you choose five numbers between 1 and 69, and one Powerball number between 1 and 26. On the rare occasions when I play, I haven’t hit on even one of my six numbers. I wondered why.
So I calculated the probability of having no winning numbers out of the six. It’s 65.2 percent. Can you imagine picking six numbers and having an 65.2-percent probability that not one of them will be drawn? The lottery may be fun, but it’s really a losing game.
