These Kansas towns offer unlocked, public storm shelters during tornadoes
These communities offer safe rooms or basements that serve as public tornado shelters. They are unlocked during a tornado warning, even in the middle of the night.
Andover - Newly built restroom in Central Park, 1607 E. Central, open 24/7; Andover Police Department, 909 N. Andover, is open 24/7; City Hall, at 1609 E. Central, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the Andover Public Library, at 1511 E. Central, is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Augusta – Public safety building safe room, 2100 N. Ohio
Cheney – Senior center, 516 N. Main
Derby - Fire Station #82, 1401 N. Rock Road, park north of the first station and enter through the east door upstairs, handicap accessible entrance is on the west side, animals are allowed and crates are available; Pleasantview Baptist Church, 1335 N. Buckner, enter on the south side; South Rock Christian Church, 900 S. Rock, enter on the west side; Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 431 S. Woodlawn, enter using the south door on the east side of the building.
Douglass - Middle school support facility, 914 E. First.
El Dorado - City Hall basement, 220 E. First; senior center, 210 E. Second
Haysville – City hall, 200 W. Grand
Kansas Turnpike - Shelters are in place along the Turnpike for employees and customers, but should not be used by local residents. The location of the shelters are here.
Maize - Community Building at 401 S. Khedive and City Hall, 10100 W Grady Ave. Enter via the storm shelter entrance at the front of the building near the flag poles.
Mulvane - Police Department, 211 N. Second
Park City - Public library, 3107 E. 61st St. North
Rose Hill - Christian Church, 314 N. Rose Hill Road; First Baptist Church, 1206 N. Rose Hill Road; Bible Church, 1410 N. Main; RHUM Day Care, 109 S. Main
Valley Center - Methodist Church, 560 N. Park (has handicap lift and elevator)
Wellington - Sumner Regional Medical Center, 1323 N. A St. (use southeast basement entrance; accepts pets in carriers); Wellington Health and Rehab Center, 1600 W. Eighth St.
