Teen injured in basketball court shooting

File photo

A 17-year-old boy was shot during an altercation on a basketball court in north Wichita on Sunday, according to police.

Police were called to the 2600 block of North Piatt just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday and discovered that the injured youth had been taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg, Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said.

About 15 people were in the area of the shooting before officers arrived. Woodrow said the suspect in the shooting is believed to be a man between the ages of 18 and 25 who was armed with two handguns.

The suspect was seen in a red Dodge Charger with the word “Charger” written on the back of the car, Woodrow said. Shots may have also been fired back at the suspect, Woodrow said.

A house in the 2600 block of North Ash and a vehicle parked along Piatt were struck by gunfire, Woodrow said, though no other injuries were reported.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area of the shooting Sunday afternoon to come forward if they have information. Witnesses can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
