An overnight shooting late Thursday left a man dead in south Wichita.

A call of a shooting came in from the 2700 block of South Seneca at about 11 p.m., a Sedgwick County dispatcher said. That’s between Pawnee and 31st Street South.

Officers responding to the call found a man in the parking lot with a single gunshot wound, said Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile at a news briefing Friday.

Ojile said he was pronounced dead on scene.

Brandon Nelson, 22, was identified as the victim in the shooting. He lived at the Village Park at Kingsborough apartment complex where the shooting occurred.

Ojile said Nelson was standing in the parking lot when a car pulled into the lot. He began talking with someone in the mid-size, four-door car.

“One of the individuals in the vehicle shot … Nelson, killing him. The vehicle then fled the area,” Ojile said.

He said police are still interviewing witnesses.

Ojile said anyone with information about the shooting should call 911, the Wichita Police Department’s homicide division at 316-268-4182 or Wichita-Sedgwick County Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

Ojile said the shooting was the 11th homicide of the year.
