Woman shot in head Monday dies

A 22-year-old woman found Monday with a gunshot wound to her head near Woodlawn and 29th Street North has died, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Wichita police arrested the woman’s 27-year-old former boyfriend — identified in jail records as Dane Thomas Owens — late Monday in connection with the shooting. The motive for the violence has not yet been discussed publicly by authorities.

Police said Tuesday that the couple recently had broken up but had maintained contact off and on over the past few weeks. The woman was found injured and unconscious around 4 p.m. Monday at a house in the 2600 block of North Meadow Oaks after she failed to pick her mother up from work. Police think she was shot before noon.

The woman was taken for treatment at Wesley Medical Center, where she died, the hospital said late Wednesday morning in an e-mailed response to questions.

Wichita police on Tuesday had described her condition as “extremely critical.” Authorities have not released her name.

Owens, who was taken into custody in Andover, remains in Sedgwick County Jail. He is now being held on suspicion of first-degree premeditated murder, according to online jail records. Those records listed no bond amount for him Wednesday morning.

The handgun used in the shooting was found in a lake in far east Wichita, police have said.
