Speed a possible factor in collision that killed bicyclist
Speed may have been a factor in a collision between a car and a bicyclist that killed the man on the bike Saturday afternoon, police said Monday.
A 53-year-old man was legally crossing West Street at St. Louis on his bicycle from west to east when he was struck by a southbound BMW shortly before 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Capt. Doug Nolte said. That’s just south of Central.
The impact of the collision sent the BMW across the center line on West, where it struck another car, Nolte said. That car then collided with yet another car. The drivers of those two vehicles were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.
The 16-year-old boy driving the BMW was not hurt, Nolte said.
“We believe speed” on the part of the BMW “was a contributing factor,” he said.
No arrests have been made, he said. The collision remains under investigation.
The man on the bicycle died at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
