Bicyclist killed in three-car collision on West Street (+video)

One person is dead following a collision of three cars and a bicyclist in the 400 block of North West Street on Saturday, police said.

Wichita police Sgt. Troy Nedbalek said officers responded to the scene, about two blocks south of Central and West, at around 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

An approximately 50-year-old man on a bicycle was attempting to cross the street from east to west, he said.

A BMW driving south on West Street apparently crossed the center line and hit a Honda driving north head-on. Almost at the same time, a Volkwagen Beetle that was turning out of a side street or private drive collided into the two cars.

The bicyclist was caught in the middle of the wreck and was pronounced dead at the scene, Nedbalek said.

Three other people received non-life-threatening injuries in the collision, he said.

“It’s a pretty bad scene,” Nedbalek said.

West Street will be blocked from Third Street to St. Louis Street “probably most of the night,” Nedbalek said Saturday afternoon.

Police are investigating “to see if speed or any other factors were involved,” he said.

Police had not identified the man killed, as they were still trying to notify his family, Nedbalek said.
