Snow causes wrecks across city; record low set for April 7

Streets in Wichita were slick with snow on Saturday morning, causing slide-offs and numerous accidents across the city.

There were eight crashes reported on Kellogg from Edwards to West before 8 a.m. No injuries were reported in those wrecks, according to local scanner traffic.

The crashes continued throughout the morning from K-96, Kellogg and I-135.

The emergency accident reporting plan remains in effect for the city. Motorists who are involved in a non-injury accident are asked to move their vehicles, exchange information with the other driver involved and report the accident within 24 hours of the wreck. If there are injuries, call 911.

Snow started falling overnight after some sleet on Friday evening.

Saturday also set a record low for April 7 — it was 18 degrees in Wichita. The last record low was 21 degrees in 2009, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.

About an inch and a half of snow was reported in far west Wichita. McPherson, Hillsboro, Hale and Great Bend all received an inch of snow. Goddard, Maize, and Kingman received about an inch and a half.

The cold weather forced the Support Local Law Enforcement Community Parade and Block Party that was scheduled for Saturday morning to postpone until May.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is possible early Sunday morning for central and south central Kansas, especially in locations north of Highway 400.

But if you start feeling down about the cold weather in April, just remember that it'll be 80 degrees in Wichita by Wednesday.
