Woman in critical condition after Riverside house fire
A 47-year-old woman is in critical condition after firefighters found her unresponsive in a house fire early Friday morning.
Fire crews responded to a call at 2:50 a.m. in the 800 block of North Nims, where a large house had been converted into four apartments, Wichita Fire Marshal Stuart Bevis said. Fire could be seen from two windows at the back of the house.
Firefighters forced entry into the house and found the woman unresponsive just inside the door of an apartment, Bevis said. She was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis where she is in critical condition. She had significant smoke inhalation, Bevis said, and she suffered burns over an estimated 20 percent of her body.
The fire was mostly contained to one apartment. The other three apartments were occupied and had smoke alarms go off, Bevis said. There were no other injuries.
Investigators have not yet found a cause of the fire, Bevis said.
He said there is no indication of a smoke alarm in the apartment where the fire began. An estimated $60,000 in damage includes $50,000 to the building and $10,000 to its contents.
